Dr. Buerkett Featured in Tampa Bay Times with Vital Holiday Pet Safety Tips

Dr. Ellen Buerkett, was recently interviewed by the Tampa Bay Times to share crucial tips for keeping pets safe during the holiday season.

The holidays can be a perilous time for pets, with veterinary clinics and ERs often busier. Dr. Buerkett highlights common dangers, such as dietary indiscretions leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and pancreatitis. She emphasizes that pets are not accustomed to varied diets like humans and advises against sharing holiday treats like turkey with them.

‘The biggest thing is unlike ourselves, who eat a variety of different foods, dogs and cats are really just used to eating their kibble day in and out,’ Buerkett said.

’And for that reason, it’s really easy for them to develop secondary issues. Even if it might seem like not a big deal — a little bit of turkey here, that kind of thing — in a small pet or even a big one that’s not used to a lot of variety, it can make a big difference really fast.’

Dr. Buerkett also warns against toxic items and indigestible objects like grapes, onions, garlic, seeds, and decorations, noting that even seemingly harmless items can cause serious health issues.

Furthermore, she suggests creating a safe space or room for pets to avoid accidental escapes or ingestions. Her insights underscore the importance of vigilant pet care during festive times.
